Ottawa could get wintery Sunday, as freezing rain threatens to complicate traffic

Last month, your snow fell like snow and your ice flew like ice. Well, this month, it’s going to happen again.

Your rush hour commute to work could be tricky this Sunday, when freezing rain develops in the city and spreads to the rest of Canada’s national capital region, the weather office said.

It won’t be much fun, but the nor’easter won’t be a terrible winter storm. Highs will be cool, the roads will be icy and snow is still possible.

In Ottawa, Friday will start off partly sunny with a risk of showers turning to freezing rain overnight.

In the GTA, residents will face the same scenario. But on a much smaller scale.

The weather office is calling for a widespread 60 per cent chance of freezing rain, with an additional five to 15 centimetres of snow on the ground by Monday.

The good news is that this won’t be an inch of ice lurking on the road and will be slow-moving, meaning the roads won’t be nearly as dangerous, Environment Canada predicts.

“The main issue will be heavy ice, mainly on trees and power lines,” Environment Canada said.

Some drivers have already reported slick roads in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and areas north of Toronto.

It will also be rainy and windy on Saturday, with a 20 to 30 per cent chance of rain and a high of about 1C. On Sunday, it will be a similar weather day, with a mix of sun and cloud, with the same high and a 40 per cent chance of rain. Monday will have a 40 per cent chance of rain and a high of 3C.
